<description>the official launch of wasted poppy productions

21st – 24th march 2013

“art is the queen of all sciences communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world.” – leonardo da vinci

with climate change hot on our heels and the abuse of human rights rife, the official launch for wasted poppy productions is just what we’ve been waiting for and it’s coming to the great eastern bear!

created by dannie lu carr, the budding wasted poppy production organization nurtures creative and scientific thought with a long term aim of re-investing time, energy and resources into arts education, encouraging the individual to work to their unique points of strength and passion in order to excel positively and enable the responsibility for climate change.

the official launch of wasted poppy productions will showcase the eclectic works ranging from strange discarded objects, film set in a futuristic dystopia to truthful portraits from original artists such as jaisen yates, ryan de silva and charlotte nicholls.

‘if we don’t continue to nurture creative thought, alongside scientific thought, then a progressive future is frighteningly limited. this issue is key for environmental issues and our solving of the complex problems we now face. respecting human rights is imperative if we are going to work together to solve these problems. our positive and progressive future therefore depends on the action of every individual. please support us in the kicking out of an apathetic attitude worldwide in order to take responsibility and progress together.’

		<description>Exhibition period: November 30th 2012 - December 9th 2012, in partnership with BAMM

From the 8th November onwards China’s communist party will meet to confirm its next leader, along with
9 other party members to make up the politburo who will control the country for the next 10 years. The out going leadership - headed by Hu Jintao and his ideology of the ‘harmonious society’, guided by the
‘scientific development perspective’ which has been the hallmark of Hu’s decade at the top - is to be replaced by a new leader with their own legacy slogan.

The new leader (and slogan) will determine the direction in which the Chinese people and many global events will take shape. In these next 10 years the Chinese people and their leader will be tested by issue upon issue created from its rapid and unprecedented growth, which has made China the formidable world power it is today. This age of acclimatisation has been the backbone of photographer Chris Barrett’s work. Barrett has embarked upon a journey to understand the perpetual notion of ‘todays China’ by following one of the Communist Parties more unique policies; a policy that has changed China both physically and mentally, a policy that has transformed the Chinese family dynamic and its demographic image forever.

Through Barrett’s work we are introduced to the now iconic policy of birth planning, which is often referred
to as the ‘one-child policy’ by the outside world. The photographs present the formal imagery of the modern Chinese family coupled with black and white ‘taken’ images, found from Weibo - the Chinese version of twitter.

The exhibition touches upon an enduring exploration into the intended and unintended by-products and ramifications that the policy has been responsible for. In an ongoing dialogue between the
photographer, Chinese nationals and the world-at-large, an interesting visual perspective emerges in regards to the People’s Republic of China, it’s populus and the people amongst the population- something we are sure to learn more about in the near future.

I Spy
This piece questions the role that all of the little gadgets we use from day to day play in our lives. Frequently, they are a form of escapism, used to avoid thinking and interacting by staring into the information space. Often they are being used as a tool to spy on us and gather data about our habits. For once, they are “consciously” staring back at us, moving and following viewers around.
A computer uses a Kinect 3D camera to track people’s locations and then sends them to the motors that control the orientations of the screens within the mobile.

		<description>California, 1986

"When I pulled off the freeway into San Diego, I had a single twenty dollar bill in my wallet. My car, a 1973 Toyoto station wagon, rattled my teeth and died in idle. At stops I had to divide my right foot: heel on the brake, toes revving the accelerator. I had barely enough gas to get back to Los Angeles.

On El Cajon Boulevard I drove slowly and studied the street walkers. In their eyes I could see desperation induced madness, premature death. In my eyes they could see my craving for the nasty little secret I kept from friends and family. I could give my twenty dollars to any one of these women. I could buy a quick sex fix and
she could buy enough crack to put a smile on her face for an hour or so.

In the passenger seat, belted and buckled, frail and beautiful, my four-year-old son, Dashiell, slept curled around his best friend, a pillow-sized stu!ed facsimile of Hulk Hogan. It was Sunday night and my weekend with my little boy was over.

When we arrived at his mother’s house, Dash awoke. He cried and clung tightly, arms around my neck. He didn’t want me to go. His mother Sylvia, my ex-wife, was happy to see me go, but first she wanted money. I made lame excuses. She called me a jerk and pried our son from my embrace. I took my twenty dollars and drove back to El Cajon Boulevard."

Cruising nighttime byways for an adrenaline high, Scot Sothern first patronized the marketplace of curbside prostitution on a prurient whim. Diving to the murky depths of sexual obsession he resurfaced five years later, shell shocked, and without excuse. While there, trusty Nikon in hand, Scot snapped what he saw: full-frontal X-rated realities, fine-art documents, black and white, pathos and pizzazz.

LOWLIFE is an illustrated diary of dysfunction; the confessions of a befuddled baby-boomer maintaining a precarious connection to propriety and fatherhood while side-tripping into noirish infatuations. These stories and images, shot mostly in Southern California between 1986 and 1990 record the existence of the many disenfranchised Americans, men and women, hawking body and soul for the price of a Big Mac and a fix, struggling in a culture that deems them criminal and expendable.

Jo's collection encapsulates the enduring enchantment of the British landscape. At once isolated and unified, each photograph is a mesmeric portal into the glories of rural Britain. Peripheries captures the at times bizarre juxtaposition that can be found in the forests and fields of our seemingly familiar surroundings.

As a photographer, Jo's work centres around the imprints of humankind on the 'geographic landscape that we inhabit'. Peripheries is a delicate, lyrical extension of this. Manmade relics punctuate and scar the otherwise untarnished natural world, acting as physical reminders of what we left behind, and asking questions about what we will continue to leave behind. This lends the work a kind of conscious awareness of the passage of time.

Every picture hung in the exhibition at the Bear was steeped in the raw, slightly chilling light of a British winter, which served to increase the often desolate atmosphere of the collection. Like a Hansel and Gretel breadcrumb trail through the woods, discarded industrial and military relics occupy every serene scene. The result is one of palpable detachment. But more than that; this photography is a reminder of the eery and fragile beauty of the world that we should be striving to preserve.

		<description>Exhibition period: 10th May - 10th June 2012

'Moronic' takes the form of a photographic commentary on ‘the linguistic paradoxes found within news media search engines, using a variety of still-life and performative methods’. Monochromatic forms, sometimes elusive, sometimes sharp, occupy each picture.

The body of work acts as a playful narrative that flirts with rhetoric and upturns linguistic meaning. Each photograph is an embodiment of an oxymoron. ‘Half Naked’ and ‘Overfull’ are stellar examples of artistic works asking questions about the very nature and existence of language.

Daniel Evans and Brendan Baker have formed a photography collective spanning the last 18 months that has seen their work displayed in group exhibitions in locations as diverse as Los Angeles and New York, as well as a couple of London shows. Published work has included features in Source and Hotshoe. Since graduating in 2011, the pair have produced a new series from a residency in India, and shot for the likes of Nowness, Pop, and Self Publish Be Happy.

'An image of a fish with fingers, a plant with eggs hanging from it like leaves, a neutral piece of paper....surrendering. What is going on in these photographs? In looking, a theme becomes apparent. All of the images are, well, moronic. Daniel Evans and Brendan Baker make work that “explores and exploits both the fragility and flexibility of language”, creating extremely literal transliterations of common phrase. Within this, a form of cuttingly bright yet rampant stupidity is clear. The viewer becomes engaged in a game, striving to understand the pun that lurks somewhere on the surface. Let’s play...'

		<description>Exhibition Period:

Kareena is a Sydney born, London based artist,
designer and flaneuse, who collects fine bone china
tea sets, but prefers to drink coffee.

Through her delicately whimsical works on paper
she considers the human condition and its polarity
of isolation and companionship.

Highlighting her interest in the subtlety of poses and
expression, she brings to life an illusory and haunting
world that is unique and refreshing in its simplicity.
